First things first, boil the rice untill sofened as you would with any other dish that requires rice. While your rice is boiling put the Katsuobushi flakes in a bowl and let them soak in soy sauce. You can add seasoning to the rice to give it a little flavor, but the traditional way is plain rice. Once your rice is done mold about 80 grams of rice into the shape of a triangle and add your soked Katsuobushi to the middle to form the triangle around it. use the sea weed to wrap the bottom and Bam! your done.
I've watched anime the majority of my life and I know this is where you got this dish recipe idea from. I literally never knew it was a real food. It looks exactly like how it is drawn in anime as well. I always figured this was like the giant chicken legs you see in cartoons that they will be eating at dinner. They always look so good, but the closest you can get to anything looking like it in real life is a giant turkey leg from the fair. I find it hilarious that this picture actually looks like the Onigiri found in every anime (an exaggeration) ever made. This is a dish I will definitely have to prepare some time in the future. I hope it will be as delightful in person as it seems to be in cartoons.
ReplyDeleteLooks very interesting Theo. I have never heard of this dish. I would try this just to say I did. Is it anything like sushi? And, why did you pick this dish?

ReplyDeleteI chose this one because I always saw my favorite characters eating them growing up, I haven't made it yet but I'd imagine its kind of like a giant sushi roll. I bet you could stuff it with the same stuff too, you might have just made a new recipe!
DeleteI also watched some anime growing up. I remember thinking that these were like donuts when I was a kid. I think it would be interesting to try them, since I've seen them so much but I've never tried them.
