Journal 5

Journal 5- Rebecca Aleshire
In the book Holding On I chose Matthew Kennedy. It is written in first person point of view because he wants to tell people his story. It starts off telling how he was born on Coney Island in 1904. Then it goes on to tell how his family ended up on Coney Island. By his story it tells how he got to live with his grandma and meet extraordinary people that we wouldn't meet in our everyday lives. First thing I noticed in the picture was the $3 sign because when you get on a ride today all you see are signs that tell you where to go or stay safe by keeping your feet and arms inside the ride at all times. The second thing I noticed was it looked small compared to rides that I have ridden. Lastly I noticed was there are no buttons or speakers. To me the ride would not look near as exciting as todays. The man in the picture looks comfortable with his surroundings and contented. To be a Director of Coney Island I feel like you would have to know how to keep things running and try avoiding accidents. You would also have to learn how to communicate well with others and keep your mind open to new ideas so customers will continue to come back. The passage that meant the most to me was he lived on Coney Island for 70 years and even to this day he still thinks that it is the most wonderful place in the world. This to mean showed his love for Coney Island and how you can keep something alive for 70 years if you work hard enough.

  1. I think that communication skills are something that we lack together. I think that it's something that must of the profiles in this story have to have to be able to succeed in what they want to do.

  3. The rides must have been exciting for their time, especially with how dangerous they were. Today we have exciting rides, but there isn't much danger, that might have partly made them more exhilarating than they actually were.

  4. Great observations on the picture! I agree, Kennedy does seem very passionate about his home. It is refreshing to see someone so dedicated to what they love and believe in.
