Journal 5: Jim Bishop, Castle Builder - Antonio

The point of view if first person description for this profile. There are a few italicized sentences of background information, but other than that everything is explained from Bishop's point of view. Three things I notice about the photo are, first, he has a wide grin while standing atop the castle. Second, the designs in stones lining the edge of the tower that shows the amount of detail he put in. Third, the landscape in the background looks vast and makes the castle feel authentic. The photo conveys the pride that Bishop feels for his work, as he stands atop his creation in a power stance with big smile. Bishop represents creativity because he is making a castle by himself, not much more needs expounded upon here. The skill he has which is most important for what he does is determination. Many people do not have the drive to work on such a monumental task, however it shows that loving what you do is important in order to continue doing it. The passage I chose is on page 159 and is the closing sentence, "How many people are here? The three of us! It ain't any good unless somebody's here to see it! If somebody ain't gettin' any enjoyment out of it, then it's just a pile of rocks!"

  1. I think this passage is truly inspiring. This man is genuinely building castles! I've never even seen a castle outside of hollywood films. I didn't even know it was legal to build castles in the United States LOL. I definitely want to travel to see these in my lifetime. Hell, imagine living in one of these? Even for a couple days, I think the experience would be amazing. I agree with you in that i think many people do not have the determination that he has. Most people quit when the tide gets rough but this man stuck to it and built a legitimate castle! Just imagine how long it would take and the creativity you would need to do so. This man is truly inspiring.

  2. This photo is also one of my favorites form the book so far. I think it really takes us back in time to when castles were very popular. It is great to see people today still fulfilling out dreams from history. The thought of never letting what you love die is key here. On top of that, the hard work put into building these castles is outrageous to think about. This man is definitely dedicated.

  4. I also really liked that quote. It shows that Bishop was afraid that when he was gone, no one would remember him. I think this is a fear that a lot of people have, because its kind of scary to think that one day no one will remember your name.

  5. I loved not only the profile picture, but the whole profile itself. There are a lot of stories in here about determination, but i think this is one that sits at the top. The picture really shows that too. Just think about people building houses these days. They use crews of people not just one or two. It is pretty incredible. I would love to actually see this with my own eyes one day.
